The Jupiters Summer Surf Girl program is first and foremost a member development program which seeks to engage female members within Surf Life Saving and to develop their skills and experience for their future careers within and outside the movement.  Every year, clubs are given the opportunity to nominate an entrant who will spend 9-12 months fundraising as an ambassador for surf lifesaving.

Throughout the year, the Jupiters Summer Surf Girls become the public face of Surf Life Saving to promote Surf Life Saving and the vital need for support and funds from communities across Queensland.
The program has been running annually since 1964 and, through its history, has raised more the $15.4 million for Surf Life Saving Clubs within Queensland. It has now developed into the largest and longest running annual club fundraiser and awareness program of its kind within Australia.  All funds raised are distributed back into participating clubs to be used in a variety of ways including purchase and maintenance of new rescue equipment, surf safety education, member development, increasing volunteer memberships and expanding training programs.

The Summer Surf Girl program also successfully highlights the role women hold within Surf Life Saving, a role that has changed significantly over the last 49 years. Today, these fully trained female lifesavers perform various operational roles within their clubs including Patrol members, Patrol Captain, IRB Captain, Youth Development Officers, Junior Activities Coordinators, First Aid Officers and in Club Administration.

In 2016 we had three representatives in our region who raised over 50% of the State total, and Shannon Morgan from Townsville Picnic Bay was crowned Runner-Up.  All three young ladies have raised much needed funds for their respective clubs and have helped to raise the profile of their clubs in their wider community.  For this, we thank them and congratulate them on their hard work and dedication.

To register to be your club’s 2017 Summer Surf Girl, or if you know of anyone who may be the perfect ambassador please encourage them to join your club and make a difference to the community.  The registration form and conditions of entry for the 17/18 season will be released soon – so keep checking back.
